What are Centers?

In the middle of your bodygraph are nine geometric shapes — the nine Centers. They're like energy centers in your design, and each has its own theme. Together they show how your energy flows and where you're strong and where you're open.

The nine Centers are inspired by the chakra system, but they're not the same thing. In Human Design, some Centers are defined — colored in your chart — and some are open — white. This is one of the most important things to understand in your design.

A defined Center is a Center where you have consistent energy. It's a place where you're reliable, where you have a steady supply of that theme's energy. An open Center is a place where you're open to influence from others — and where you can be receptive to conditioning.

The nine Centers

The Head Center is the Center of inspiration and questions. It's where you get ideas and wonder about things. When it's defined, you have a steady stream of inspiration. When it's open, you're open to others' inspiration and can feel pressure to have all the answers.

The Ajna Center is the Center of thinking and conceptualization. It's where you process ideas and shape them into understanding. A defined Ajna gives you a consistent way of thinking. An open Ajna makes you open to others' thoughts and can lead to over-analysis.

The Throat Center is the Center of communication and action. It's where you express yourself and act in the world. A defined Throat gives you a consistent voice. An open Throat makes you open to others' expression and can create pressure to speak or act.

The G Center is the Center of direction and love. It's where you feel your path in life and your capacity to love. A defined G gives you a steady sense of direction. An open G makes you open to finding your direction through others and through your environment.

The Heart Center is the Center of will and ego. It's where you find your willpower and your ability to perform. A defined Heart gives you a consistent will. An open Heart makes you open to others' will and can create pressure to prove yourself.

The Sacral Center is the Center of life force and work. It's where your life energy flows. A defined Sacral gives you an inexhaustible source of energy. An open Sacral makes you open to others' energy and can lead to exhaustion if you're not careful.

The Solar Plexus Center is the Center of emotions and emotional wave. It's where you experience feelings. A defined Solar Plexus gives you a consistent emotional wave. An open Solar Plexus makes you open to others' feelings and can make you take on others' emotional energy.

The Spleen Center is the Center of stress and adrenaline. It's where you handle pressure. A defined Spleen gives you a consistent ability to handle stress. An open Spleen makes you open to others' stress and can make you feel pressured to act quickly.

The Root Center is the Center of drive and adrenaline. It's where your motivation and your pressure to act come from. A defined Root gives you a steady drive. An open Root makes you open to others' drive and can create a sense of urgency.

Defined and open Centers

The difference between defined and open Centers is one of the most powerful insights in Human Design. Your defined Centers are your strengths — the places where you're consistent and reliable. They're your fixed energy, the one you can always count on.

Your open Centers aren't weaknesses — they're places of potential and wisdom. An open Center is a place where you can learn deeply about that theme's energy, because you experience it in many different ways through others. Open Centers are where your wisdom grows.

But open Centers are also where conditioning happens. When you're open to influence, you can take on others' energy as if it were your own. You can feel others' stress, others' feelings, others' pressure. Understanding your open Centers helps you tell your energy apart from others'.

Conditioning and open Centers

Conditioning is what happens when we take on energy that isn't our own. In your open Centers, you're especially receptive to this. You can feel others' feelings as if they were yours, others' stress, others' pressure to act.

This isn't bad — it's part of how we learn and grow. But it can become problematic when we don't recognize it. When you believe others' energy is your own, you can make decisions based on things that aren't true for you.

Understanding your open Centers is learning to tell your energy apart from others'. It's learning to be present in an open Center without identifying with it. It's a deep form of freedom — the freedom to be with others without losing yourself.

Living with your Centers

Living with your Centers is about embracing both your strengths and your openness. Your defined Centers give you a foundation to stand on — a consistent energy you can always count on. Your open Centers give you wisdom and depth.

When you understand your Centers, you understand better why some situations give you energy and others drain you. You understand why some people affect you strongly. You understand why you sometimes feel things that aren't yours.

The most beautiful thing about understanding your Centers is the freedom it gives. You stop believing everything you feel is yours. You learn to be present with others without losing yourself. You learn to trust your own energy — and to be open to the world without being overwhelmed by it.
